Albania's self-proclaimed king dies at 72 (AP)

TIRANA, Albania ? A spokeswoman for Albania's royal family says that King Leka I Zogu, the self-proclaimed heir to the throne, has died. He was 72.

Julinda Kamberi says King Leka I died of heart and lung problems at Tirana's Mother Teresa Hospital on Wednesday.

King Leka I was the only son of the late King Ahmet Zogu who declared himself king of Albania in 1928 and ruled until the Italian army invaded Albania in 1939, forcing the family flee the country two days after King Leka I was born.

Albania's communist rulers abolished the monarchy in 1946.

King Leka I returned to Albania in 2002, following the collapse of the communist rule.

He is survived by his son, Leka II.

Funeral arrangements were not made public yet.

Hazing may have played role in death at FAMU

Hazing is being blamed for the death of a Florida A&M University student. His family says the school has a?culture of?hazing.

Robert Champion fell in love with music at about age 6 when he saw a marching band at a parade in downtown Atlanta. So mesmerized by the festivities, he came home, took out pots and pans and started banging away like a little drummer.

His passion led him to marching bands from middle school through college. He was a drum major for the famed Marching 100 band of Florida A&M University, a group that has performed at Super Bowls, the Grammys and presidential inaugurations. The prestige brought along a "culture of?hazing" and a secret world that played a role in Champion's death, his family said Monday.

"It needs to stop. The whole purpose is to put this out there and let people know there has to be a change," Champion's mother, Pam, said at a news conference.

On Nov. 19, after the school's football team lost its annual game with rival Bethune-Cookman, Champion collapsed on a bus parked outside an Orlando, Fla., hotel. The 26-year-old junior had been vomiting and complained he couldn't breathe shortly before he became unconscious.

When authorities arrived about 9:45 p.m., Champion was unresponsive. He died at a nearby hospital.

Authorities have not released any more details, except to say?hazing?played a role. An attorney representing Champion's family also refused to talk specifics.

"We are confident from what we've learned that?hazing?was a part of his death. We've got to expose this culture and eradicate it," Christopher Chestnut said. "There's a pattern and practice of covering up this culture."

Since Champion's death, the school has shuttered the marching band and the rest of the music department's performances. The longtime band director, Julian White, was fired.

The college also announced an independent review led by a former state attorney general and an ex-local police chief in Tallahassee, where the historically black college is based.

White, who believes he was unfairly dismissed, said Monday he had suspended 26 band members for?hazing?two weeks before Champion died. He took heat for the decision, particularly from the parents of band members, and said the punishments were like suspending star football players.

"And so the band members were apprehensive. 'Doc, you think we can go without 19 trombone players?'" White said at a Tallahassee news conference. "And other folks. 'Doc, do you thing you can do it without them?' My comment was, it doesn't matter, I am not going to sacrifice the performance for the principle."

Small Business Saturday brings in shoppers | WAVY.com | Norfolk, Va.

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Saturday marked the second annual Small Business Saturday.

It's a movement sponsored by a credit card company.

Now local toy stores, restaurants, and specialty shops, like Le Marche in Norfolk, jumped on board with their own deals.

"I think it's wonderful that American Express would bring it to the minds of the public to shop local and to spend their money in local businesses, because we are the backbone of the community and we're the ones who contribute," said store owner Donna Marie Murphy.

Donna Murphy also says Small Business Saturday seems to be working because the first two customers on Saturday were new and had never been there before.

According to the Small Business Administration, small business created 65 percent of new jobs between 1993 and 2009.

Facebook can practically taste that $10 billion IPO

The social networking giant Facebook Inc. continues to tease investors anticipating its initial public offering, which The Wall Street Journal hears has been inched back up to April or June 2012, after previous reports that it would occur later next year. Current chatter has Mark Zuckerberg and co. working with the SEC on an exact filing date, with eyes toward raising $10 billion, thereby valuing the company at $100 billion. A Facebook spokesman said, "We're not going to participate in speculation about an IPO." Even without him, there's more than enough speculation to go around.

According to the Journal's anonymous sources, Facebook has created its own prospectus, or SEC-required business outline, although outside bankers or lawyers typically handle that part of the filing. Investment banks, too, are being kept at arm's length because Facebook might not even need them, "since the company is so highly sought after by major investors."

Facebook could be only the fourth American company to complete an IPO over $10 billion, joining Visa, General Motors, and AT&T. An offering that size would dwarf any Internet or technology company so far, include rival Google, which holds the top domestic spot with its $1.9 billion 2004 sale. Cue Zuckerberg's maniacal (nervous?) laugh.

Gary Haugen, Convicted Murderer, Criticizes Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber For Halting His Execution

SALEM, Ore. -- A condemned inmate who was scheduled to be executed next month is slamming Gov. John Kitzhaber for giving him a reprieve, saying the governor didn't have the guts to carry out the execution.

Two-time murderer Gary Haugen had voluntarily given up his legal challenges, saying he wants to be executed in protest of a criminal justice system he views as broken. But Kitzhaber on Tuesday said he won't allow anyone to be executed while he is in office, calling Oregon's death penalty scheme "compromised and inequitable."

"I feel he's a paper cowboy," he said. "He couldn't pull the trigger."

Haugen's criticism reverses his earlier praise of Kitzhaber's decision during an interview with The Oregonian. He told the Portland newspaper that Kitzhaber cited some of the same criticism of the death penalty that Haugen has raised.

After further reflection, Haugen said he came to the conclusion that the governor "basically pulled a coward's move" by acting on his personal beliefs instead of carrying out the will of Oregon voters, who reinstated the death penalty in 1984.

Haugen said he learned of the reprieve when he was summoned from an outdoor exercise break at the state penitentiary and allowed to read the governor's statement.

Kitzhaber called Oregon's death penalty system "a perversion of justice," saying the state only executes people who volunteer. Since capital punishment was legalized 27 years ago, only two people have been executed. Both of them, like Haugen, waived their legal challenges.

Kitzhaber encouraged "all Oregonians to engage in the long overdue debate that this important issue deserves" and said he would ask lawmakers to consider potential reforms during the 2013 legislative session.

The 49-year-old inmate said he plans to ask lawyers about possible legal action to fight Kitzhaber's temporary reprieve, which lasts until the governor leaves office. A Marion County judge had twice signed a death warrant ordering Haugen's execution. The first was reversed when the state Supreme Court intervened; the second was overruled by Kitzhaber two weeks before the Dec. 6 execution.

"I'm going to have to get with some serious legal experts and figure out really if he can do this," Haugen said. "I think there's got to be some constitutional violations. Man, this is definitely cruel and unusual punishment. You don't bring a guy to the table twice and then just stop it."

China sentences 113 in tainted pork scandal (AP)

BEIJING ? China's state news agency says more than 100 people including 77 government employees have been sentenced in a scandal involving pork tainted with a banned chemical. At least one person was given the death penalty.

Several farms in Henan province were found to be using the fat-burning drug clenbuterol ? a banned chemical that makes pork leaner but can harm humans.

Xinhua News Agency says the main culprit, Liu Xiang, was convicted of harming public safety and sentenced to death, with the execution delayed for two years. Such sentences often are later commuted to life imprisonment.

Clenbuterol can cause nausea, dizziness and heart palpitations. Pig farmers like to use it because it yields leaner meat, which fetches a higher price.

Spanish savings bank directors suspected of fraud (AP)

MADRID ? A Spanish savings bank has fired two directors and is investigating two former executives for allegedly syphoning off euro20 million ($26.5 million) into secret pension funds, the bank said Saturday.

The board of directors of Caixa Penedes bank had "required the departure" of its president, Ricard Pages, and director general Manuel Troyano. It said both men had agreed to leave, the bank said in a statement.

The decision comes after state prosecutor for the northeastern region of Catalonia, Teresa Compte, said her office was investigating all four on suspicion of involvement in illegal activity.

Regional newspaper La Vanguardia said the case was the first time prosecutors had investigated senior executives for "criminal responsibility" in their handling of a savings bank.

The prosecutor named the other two former executives as Joan Caellas and Jaume Jorba.

Caixa Penedes along with partners Cajamurcia, CajaGRANADA and SA NOSTRA owns Banco Mare Nostrum, S.A. (BMN). The group received euro916 million ($1.21 billion) in restructuring aid from the Bank of Spain's Fund for Orderly Bank Restructuring (FROB).

The fund was set up to aid institutions meet higher reserve requirements and is aimed at strengthening their finances and quelling fears that Spain might be Europe's next country to need a bailout.

Caixa Penedes said its board "disapproved of the content, method, lack of transparency, unusual nature and disproportionate size" of the remuneration package the four directors had helped themselves to.

The pension funds were set up in another institution without the knowledge of Caixa Penedes's board.

Ignacio Fernandez Toxo, spokesman for trade union Comisiones Obreras said that if the money could be recovered it could help offset the euro45 million ($59.53 million) in wage bill savings BMN had recently said it would seek from its work force. He said many BMN employees are members of Comisiones Obreras.

The investigation comes as Spain is burdened with an unemployment rate of 21.5 percent ? nearly 5 million people out of work ? the eurozone's highest.

The country's borrowing costs have also risen to an almost unsustainable level of 7 percent interest rate on 10-year bonds. An auction of 12- and 18-month bonds last week also went badly, with Spain forced to offer very high interest rates to investors.
